The number of people paying capital gains tax (CGT) has hit 281,000 as the government collected a record £8.8bn in the last tax year, with total chargeable gains hitting £57.9bn in 2017-18.
The increase reflects a consistent trend over the last four years, as the Treasury continues to raise substantial tax take from CGT. In 2017-18 CGT revenue rose to £8.8bn, up 14% on the previous year’s £7.74bn.
