Describe yourself to us … I’m not a thoroughbred accountant; I came into accountancy via a career in commercial banking. I understand accounts for what they mean, rather than how they are constructed, so I can have meaningful business discussions with my clients. I am a risk taker, someone who likes a fresh challenge, is open to innovation and always looking out for the next new idea to propel my business forward.

Why is the future bright with the IFA?

I like the way it recognises the changing skills needed to be the technologically aware and advisory accountant of the future, with an ever increasing need for the soft skills so often overlooked in the past.

What is the most interesting part about your job?

Building client relationships, becoming their first point of reference for a variety of advice and seeing how I can make a difference to them and their business.

Most embarrassing/ funny moment in your career…

After setting up my TaxAssist Accountants office in 2002 in Lincoln, I was holidaying on a French campsite with my three children. They rushed back to our caravan excited about meeting a family, also with three children of the same ages and from Lincoln. An evening of chatting and they were duly signed up as clients and we still act for them today!

Best/most inspirational moment in your career?

When I left banking to join a local accountancy practice, I ventured into the unknown. Two years later I started building my own TaxAssist Accountants franchised practice and have never looked back.

Who is your role model, in life or in your career and why?

My father. He was the traditional bank manager, but forced to take early retirement when he reached 50. He re-trained. His positive and charitable approach to everyday life is the way I try to live my life and approach my business.

Favourite food?

I love sea bass, washed down with a glass of white wine, of course.

Most useful tech tool or app – and why?

Having been a paperless office for eight years now, the ability to quickly and accurately locate all documentation at a stroke is crucial. Virtual Cabinet does this perfectly.

How do you spend your time away from your role?

I am heavily involved in our local village football club: Welton FC. I was a manager/coach for seven years and became chairman eight years ago.

What do you see as the path ahead for you and your career?

Reducing my working week and eventually passing ownership of my franchise on, perhaps retaining a consulting role in the short term
